El Caura, que es considerado como uno de los ríos más importantes de Venezuela, tiene su nacimiento al sur del país, más allá de Sarisariñama y sube por el noroeste del Estado Bolívar hasta desembocar en el Orinoco.

La zona circundante es una reserva forestal rica en flora y fauna en la que se encuentran, por ejemplo, 400 especies de aves aproximadamente.

La biodiversidad de especies endémicas de los llanos se encuentra con la exuberante vegetación de la selva amazónica en una zona donde ni siquiera la televisión se ha aventurado a llegar. Kilómetros y kilómetros de tierra, árboles y montañas sorprenden no sólo al turista, sino a los propios especialistas que descubren en este territorio solitario todo un tesoro científico.

The Caura, considered one of the most important river in the country has its origin in the south of the country, in the surroundings of Sari Sariñama, and flows toward the northwest sector of Bolívar state until it empties into the Orinoco.

The zone surrounding it is a forest reserve rich in flora and fauna in which one encounters, for example, approximately 400 species of birds.

The biodiversity of the endemic species of the plains is found in the exuberant vegetation of the jungle in a zone where not even television has ventured to reach. Kilometers and kilometers of land, trees, and mountains surprise not only the tourist, but the specialists themselves who discover in this lonely territory a true scientific treasure.

Para empezar la aventura no hay nada mejor que adentrarse en los Raudales de La Leona en el cerro de La Candelaria. Este paraje que queda a 40 minutos en rústico de la población de Maripa encierra una zona de selva primaria en la que confluyen varios ríos que forman piscinas naturales de laja roja.

Los pozos que allí se encuentran son una suerte de oasis que invitan a pasar el resto del día. Sin embargo, hay que tener cuidado cuando se recorren los senderos, ya que la humedad ha formado una película fina sobre las rocas, que los hace extremadamente resbaladizos.

Por otra parte, en la población de Maripa se puede visitar el museo indígena y dar un paseo en curiara por el Caura. También es posible, desde allí, llegar hasta las minas de oro del Sipao, donde se aprecia a los mineros en acción mientras extraen el preciado metal, a la vez de sentirse partícipe por un instante de la llamada fiebre del oro.

En la reserva se encuentra igualmente una importante caída de agua llamada Salto Pará, pero hay que aclarar que quienes deseen conocer el sitio deberán realizar una excursión de por lo menos cinco días.

Durante la primera etapa se navega Caura arriba en curiara indígena con motor fuera de borda, atravesando diferentes raudales entre ellos la isla Yokore y el Raudal de los 5000, llamado así por la leyenda que indica que en ese sitio se halla escondido un tesoro de cinco mil morocotas de oro. Al final se llega al Campamento indígena Nichare donde se pasa la noche en hamacas.

Al alba se retoma el camino hasta el campamento Playón y luego se inicia el ascenso de 210 metros para apreciar el Salto y gran parte del territorio amazónico del Caura, la subida bien vale la pena, porque una vez que se está en la cima todo lo que se ve y se siente es indescriptible.

To start the adventure, there is nothing better than to enter the rapids of La Leona, in La Candelaria mountain. This place is 40 minutes (in 4x4 vehicle) from the village of Maripa, and encompasses a zone of unspoiled jungle, where various rivers converge, forming natural swimming pools in the red rock.

The pools found there seem like an oasis which invites you to enjoy a marvelous reprieve from the customary heat in this place.

You have to be very careful when following the trails since the humidity forms a fine film on the rocks, making them extremely slippery.

In the village of Maripa, you can visit the indigenous museum and take a ride in a curiara (native-style dugout canoe) on the Caura River. From there, it is also possible to reach the gold mines of Sipao, where you can watch miners in action when they extract the precious metal, and participate for an instant in the so-called Gold Fever.

In the reserve, there is an important waterfall called Salto Para, but to visit this place, you must undertake an excursion of at least five days.

During the first stage, one navigates up the Caura in an indigenous curiara with outboard motor, crossing different raudales or rapids, among them, those of Yokore Island and the Raudal de los 5,000, so called because of the legend that says in this place a hidden treasure of 5,000 morrocotos of gold was found. Finally, the indigenous camp of Nichare is reached, where you will spend the night in hammocks. At daybreak, continue the route toward El Playón and later begin the ascent of 210 meters to appreciate the falls and a great part of the territory of the Caura reserve. The climb is well worth the effort since once at the summit, everything you see and feel is indescribable.

Estar en pleno contacto con la naturaleza no significa la ausencia de servicios de primera. Hay sitios como el campamento Caurama, recientemente abierto al público, que ofrecen todas las comodidades de la civilización en pleno paraíso natural.

La infraestructura física de Caurama está enmarcada en dos hectáreas a orillas del Río Caura y cuenta en la actualidad con 18 habitaciones dobles con baño privado, una pista de aterrizaje de grama de 1800 metros, restaurant, caney de juegos, churuata bar, piscina.

Dentro del campamento hay lagunas y suficiente terreno como para pedalear en bicicleta montañera, cabalgar o simplemente caminar. En los alrededores pueden observarse búfalos, caballos, gavilanes, babas y diversidad de avifauna.

Cabe destacar que en Caurama se organizan los paseos anteriormente descritos, y además de una excursión a la Hacienda La Faltriquera --visita posible sólo a través del campamento--. En esta hacienda se encuentra un pequeño zoológico que permite observar y hasta acariciar venados, garzones soldados, gansos, un tapir o danta, y guacamayas volando y comiendo en las manos de los visitantes. En la parte alta del valle donde se encuentra La Faltriquera hay un naciente de agua que forma un salto y un pozo de unos 12 metros de profundidad, aunque el camino hasta el lugar es un poco accidentado bien vale la pena conocerlo, pero si el viajero no desea arriesgarse a un resbalón puede pasar el día en la piscina de la hacienda o en la churuata.

Y especialmente para los observadores de fauna se ha diseñado una excursión al río Sipao, un lugar privilegiado, de abundante avifauna que se encuentra dentro de la Reserva Forestal del Caura, y donde toparse con guacharacas de agua o chenchenas, garzas reales, águilas pescadoras, garzas silvadoras, perros de agua y hasta monos capuchinos es algo muy normal.

Entre las ventajas que ofrece la reserva forestal del Caura, y en específico la zona donde se encuentra el campamento Caurama, destaca su cercanía con Ciudad Bolívar, --a menos de 3 horas por carretera bien pavimentada, por cierto--, y de Puerto Ordaz --alrededor de tres horas y media--. Además se trata de una zona poco explotada desde el punto de vista turístico.

Y más allá de todas las emociones que regala el día, por las noches la naturaleza no deja de sorprender con detalles fascinantes. En este sentido, el viajero recordará con especial asombro cómo en medio del silencio del llano, se observan miles de luciérnagas como estrellas al ras del suelo. Ciertamente, una de tantas escenas inolvidables.

To be in full contact with nature and in a nearly virgin zone does not mean the absence of first-class services. There are places such as Campamento Caurama, recently remodeled and re-opened to the public, offering all of the comforts of civilization in the midst of a natural paradise.

The physical infrastructure of Caurama within 2 hectares on the banks of the Caura River and currently has 18 double rooms with private bath, an 1,800-meter grass landing strip, restaurant, caney with games, churuata bar, swimming pool, and the attention from its operators Orlando Echenagucia and Carlos Sanabria, in addition to the wise counsel of guides Jean Posner and Freddy.

Within the camp, there are lagoons and sufficient land to be able to explore on mountain bike, go horseback riding, or simply walk. In the surrounding area, you can see buffalo, horses, hawks, crocodiles, and a diversity of avifauna.

Caurama organizes the excursions previously described along with an outing to Hacienda La Faltriquera (a visit possible only through the camp). In this hacienda, there is a small zoo which allows you to observe and even pet deer, soldier storks, geese, a tapir, and macaws flying about and eating from the hands of visitors.

In the high part of the valley, where La Faltriquera is found, there is the source of water which forms a waterfall and pool some 12 meters deep. While the path to the place is somewhat rough, its worth visiting it. But if the traveler does not want to risk slipping, he can pass the day in the swimming pool of the hacienda or in the churuata.

An excursion to the Sipao River has been designed especially for wildlife observation. It is a privileged location with abundant avifauna which is found within the Caura Forest Reserve and where running into hoatzin, great egrets, osprey, whistling heron, giant otter, and even Capuchin monkeys is normal.

Among the advantages the Caura Forest Reserve offers, and specifically the zone where Campamento Caurama is located, is its nearness to Ciudad Bolívar (under 3.5 hours). Moreover, it is a little-exploited zone from the point of view of tourism.

Beyond all the emotions a day gives you, at night, nature does not cease surprising you with fascinating details. The traveler will remember with special amazement how in a medium of silence of the plains, thousands of twinkling stars can be observed even almost at ground level. It is certainly one of the many unforgettable scenes.
